In fase di installazione el sistema operativo Windows , in quasi tutte le versioni è richiesto di inserire una chiave di licenza. 
Se siete in fase di configurazione e non avete ancora disponibile questa informazione è comunque possibile inserire un codice temporanea che non attiva il sistema operativo ma consente comunque di completare l’installazione di Windows senza ulteriori problemi.
E’ scontato dirlo, ma se il computer poi deve esser messo in produzione allora la chiave di licenza deve essere inserita in maniera da attivare con successo il sistema operativo.
Sono disponibili queste chiavi temporanee per tutte le versioni di sistema operativo , a partire da Windows Vista , Windows 7 fino al più recente Windows 10. Inoltre sono distribuite queste chiavi anche per i sistemi operativi server da Windows 2008 Server fino a Windows 2016.
